What is Grass?
Grass is another name for Gramineae family of plants. This family is known to be the largest family on earth with having more than 9,000 different known species. Grass is one of the most important factors of life. Some plants that come from grass are rice, corn, and oats. If we did not have grass on earth what would our livestock animals be fed? Grass is also used in making sugar, liquor, bread, plastic and much more.
Grass has roots that grown down in the earth, roots are fibrous or threadlike. The roots of a grass is made to get the right nutrients from the water and soil so that it can grow. The two ways a grass grows is sideways, below ground or just above it. Grass also has a flower that blooms, and if you're luck and if you or your gardener do not mow the lawn to cut the grass, that flower will grow seeds and eventually the seed will fall into your yard and you will soon see new and healthy grass.
There are two major types things you need to know before you plant your grass. One is that you need to know your local climate like the average rainfall, and how high the temperature is during the different seasons. And the other is that the amount of sunlight your lawn will get. If you live in a cold area where the temperature does not get that high, then it is recommended that you get a “cool season grass”. Cool season grasses hold well in the cold climate area, but be careful not to plant the the cool season grass if you live in a warm area. Warm season has its own grass where it will grow well, and this grass is called “warm season grass”. The warm season grass would love to be planted in a warm climate area where there is a lot of sun and heat.
Most grasses need several hours of sun each day for it to be healthy. If you have a shady backyard and you feel that your grass is not getting enough sun, then it is best to plant some grass seeds that will grow in the shade and does not need a lot of sun to grow and be healthy. If you live in a very wet area where it rains all the time then it is good to pick a grass that will do well with a lot amount of water.
There are several different types of grasses for each type of climate, you should talk with your local nursery on which grass would be right for your home. Another important thing to decide while picking out a grass for your yard is that, is your grass going to be stepped on a lot? Some grasses can handle a lot of traffic and some do not. If you have kids or outdoor pets who are going to be in your backyard all the time and playing and stepping all over it, then it is highly advised that you pick a grass that is resilient mixture.
If you're going to plant yourself a new garden with nice grass there are three things you can do: you can plant grass seeds in the soil and wait for it to grow, you can lay turf that contains healthy grass plants, or you can transplant grass plants or small sections of grass and soil.
If you want to grow a cheap garden it the best way to go about that is to buy the grass seeds and plant them into your soil. When you're buying your grass seeds remember to buy a good species of plant with high quality, and consult with your local nursery of when to plant your grass so that the weather does not ruin your garden.
Sodding is more expensive than planting your own seeds, but the good thing about sodding is that you will have a nice and green garden in no time at all. Sods normally are sold in rolls of rectangular chunks that are about an inch thick. Just like when you plant anything else in your garden you need to prepare your soil so that the roots can set in nicely. When you get your roll of sod all you have to do is lay it out in a straight rows and put in soil around the grass where there are any empty spaces left. Then after that roll your lawn with a lawn roller and water your yard regularly until the grass has founds its foundation in your yard, and try not to walk on your grass after you have just put in the sod.
When you are transplanting your grass plants or small sections of grass and soil you should prepare your yard just like you would if you where to be seeding or sodding your yard. The only difference in grass sprigging is that dig holes into your yard and you fill water into those wholes depending on the grass species then insert your plants into the holes. After that put some soil around your plants and pat them into the ground. Remember to water your grass regularly and keep be careful of weeds in your yard.
